Red Bull

Saturday I went home to help  out a great friend, Ethan Carlson, work on a project for a Red Bull art competition.   Carlson had been invited to enter his sculpture Crimson Rage in a national Red Bull competition titled The Art of Can. The Bull was a center point of the show at the Union Station.

Ethan is planning on entering a new piece into this years Art of Can in Dallas, TX. I went and helped him with his process this weekend and took a few pictures of his progress.

About:

Bennett Roti is a ceramic artist from Spirit Lake, IA. He recently graduated in May, 2010 from the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in ceramics. Currently, he lives in Tucson, AZ.

Bennett’s main area of focus has been with the functional ceramics and forms. One of his favorite forms are teapots. Bennett's recent teapots separate his work from many other potters. The tea in the single-serving teapots, which are filled from the bottom of the pot, is meant to be consumed directly from the spout.

Although Bennett's emphasis is in ceramics, he has recently developed a passion for sculpture. His sculptures are created using a unique material commonly used as fishing bait. He started using the lures in chandeliers, and now he is exploring the combination of lures and furniture

Bennett recently worked on a ceramic installation titled, “Cost of War” where thousands of helmets were displayed to represent the number of American troops killed in Afganistan. Bennett is currently working on a piece involving the fallen soldiers of the Iraq war.
